My rule of thumb is this:
With 8 ft. ceilings, use a 6 ft. ladder.
With 10-12 ft. ceilings, use an 8 ft. ladder and adjust accordingly if ceiling height goes up.
I like to be about 3 rungs shy of the top of the ladder to work overhead for a safer stance on the ladder. Plus, if using the fiberglass ladders, the top of the ladder usually has a tray type configuration to hold small things like wire nuts, screws, etc. and places to drop screwdrivers through the top to keep them from falling to the floor.

You need a 6' fiberglass A frame and a 20' aluminum extension ladder if you have a single story house. If you have a 2 story, get a 30 foot extension ladder.

I have an aluminum 8. Only prob is crawling up into a cubby hole to change AC filter and I have to reach way down with foot to crawl back down. Roof is kind of same way. Only one spot I can climb on/off remotely safely.
My neighbor has a 12 if I need to reach a tree branch or something. That’s what neighbors are for.

I live in an old N.O. style house----2 story with 7 1/2 ft. ceiling height on the 1st floor and 10 1/2 ft. ceilings on the 2nd floor.
To my gutters are close to 20 ft. up and my 4 ladders are a 6 and 8 ft. step ladder and a 24 and 32 ft. extension ladders and I've never needed any more than that for any project around the house.

Get a four an eight and a 22ft gorilla. Keep a step in the house.
That should take care of it all unless you have super tall ceilings.
