I paid 11k 6 months ago for a Koehler 20 kw with full install. That price seems a tad high for your quote. I had another contractor quote me the same setup at 16k for mine. I’d definitely shop around.

Just from reading this thread, seems like prices vary greatly, although your quote of 18k seems super high.

In '21, when it was damn near impossible to find one, I paid 11k for a 22KW install. I felt it was a little high, but he was the only guy in the area who didn't have a 6 month wait.

Looking at prices online, you can buy a 24kw generac and transfer switch for about $7k. Where is that extra $11k going in your quote? It took my contractor about half a days work for install.

I checked at a Home & Garden show and I was quoted between $15,000 and $25,000. I plan on getting a transfer switch installed that I can plug in a dual fuel portable generator that will cost less than a $2,000. I don't need automatic start nor whole house.

I'm in the process of getting a gas meter place on my house. The electric company is doing that but they need to run about 30 feet of line to connect to the meter. The generator will be in the back of the house but it seem a bit high. The 18K is so far the cheapest quote I received. Permits are required for the job and I'm only getting quotes from licensed companies as well.

That's my current setup but we are thinking about getting whole home now. We might stay with this setup if we don't get something more reasonable though.
