what format are you trying to rip it into?

DVDFab is a good program. It's free to just decrypt and copy as VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders, but if you want to rip to AVI, MPG, iPod/iPhone format, etc. then you'll have to buy it. They do allow you to try all the premium feature for free for 30 days.

You want to turn a DVD into a file you can play on your computer, correct? Or DVD to .mp4 for iPod?

dunno, I'm sure their website has details. I only use it for the free decrypting capabilities. My SageTV HTPC system plays the ripped DVD's as VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders with no need to convert them to another format.
