Terrible. A term derived from pretty significant actual historical events is utilized on a website, and, even when the significance of the term is explained, you opt instead to credit obscure Hollywood and pop culture references that don't even make sense.

I'll bet you give credit to George Lucas for invention of the term "Stormtrooper" too, don't you? Idiot.
Wow. "Idiot"? You have no idea who I am.

I am not going to trade barbs with you, but I sincerely think you are mistaken. Perhaps the term has a different connotation for you than it does for others, but I just cited you to a thread where several people on this very board explain what it is they are referencing when they use the term. I think you are in lonely company if you think this is a reference to Goebels.

Etwas Scheiße, zum mit Pearl Harbor zu tun. But don't quote me on that my German is rusty.

Urban Dictionary puts this to rest: LINK

I am not denying that Goebels manipulated the news, but that reference does not explain the "Germans" concept as used in Tiger Rant. The Nazi's delayed publication of news was effective domestic propoganda because the facts were not well known by Germans before they were published (albeit late).
Okay. You ADMIT that "Germans" comes from Joseph Goebbels (whose name you misspell even though you could have cut and pasted it), but then you go on to quote morons from the Tiger Rant (who, as far as you know, could have been completely making the shite up) as the source for it:
quote:

This is really not a debate. You can find tons of references to this concept all over the Internet. Some message boards use the short hand "PH" for "Pearl Harbor." See LINK.

This has been discussed many times before on Tiger Rant itself. See LINK
Holy fricking shite!!

Really?!?! You use the Tiger Rant as your source?!?!?

Even when you KNOW FULL WELL that it originated with Joseph Goebbels?!?!?

I have seen some dumb shite in my time, but this is far and away the dumbest shite ever . . . in the history of ever!!!

Dude, your professor should have flunked you in history class. And you should have been flunked in every other class for citing the Tiger Rant as a history source or any other source.

You, sir, are dumber than dirt.

It makes you the King of the Morons.

The question is, what do people mean on this message board when they write "Germans." I cited you a thread where people on this message board explain what they mean when they write Germans. I also cited you to a well recognized dictionary of modern slang that explains the reference exactly as I did. There is no mystery here. The concept is well documented, and I've pointed it out to you.

I never admitted that the term Germans comes from Joseph Goebbels. I admitted that he manipulated the timing of news releases. But that concept does not explain this slang reference in which one poster chides another for "breaking" old news. For it to be "Germans" in this context, the fact would have to have been well known by others. In the Goebbels context, the facts were not well know--hence the manipulation. People on this board do not use the phrase to point out propaganda or manipulations, they use it to make fun of someone for posting something that has already been posted.

You have been proven wrong, yet you continue to insult my intelligence. I am not going to call you names. The record on this thread speaks for itself.

It still doesn't negate your error in asserting the Goebbels is the origin of why we use the "germans" expression......

The Germans really were at Pearl Harbor!

Two questions:

(1) Are you chupon?

(2) How can you be rely on Urban Dictionary? Doing the Cocomo

You do know who Karmapo1ice and Cocomo are, don't you?

Please, keep going.

First you rely on the Tiger Rant. Then you rely on the Urban Dictionary. What's next, Wikipedia?

Here's a thought: Try reading a history book!!

You quoted a bunch of morons trying to explain what they thought it meant. I never thought I would see the day when anyone would use the Tiger Rant as an actual citation.

Are you serious? People did not know the facts? The facts about the invading Russian army were not well known? Except maybe to the ENTIRE RUSSIAN ARMY and the REST OF THE WORLD.

The only people who did not know the news withheld by Goebbels were the . . . GERMANS!!

Hence the name: GERMANS.

You've quoted morons and chupon.

Tell me, what are chupon's thoughts on the history of the Pacific Theater of World War II.

Does chupon think it was a good idea to drop the Little Boy on Hiroshima? What are chupon's thoughts on Nagasaki?

You are embarrassing yourself.

First, I explain the etymology of the phrase. You call me an idiot and claim that I invented the explanation whole cloth.

Second, I show you that I did not invent it and that others on the board apply the same etymology. You claim that those other posters are also idiots or that they are alter egos of me invented specifically to support my argument in this thread.

Third, I quote you to an actual slang dictionary, which applies the very explanation that I (and others) have used. You claim that the dictionary is for idiots.

Meanwhile, you have provided absolutely no support for your explanation other than your own supposition. Quote me to a single source that supports your etymological argument. Not some irrelevant story about Goebbels, but an actual source that attribute the slang use of the term "Germans" to your theory about Goebbels. If I am such an idiot, it seems like support for your position would be easy to find. And it also seems like an explanation for why my sources are misguided would be equally easy to find.

Not to throw gasoline on the fire here, but citing TD and Urban Dictionary =/= "etymology." Your argument has nothing to do with the development of the word "germans," only how you contend it is used as an idiom.

P.S., "throw gasoline on the fire" is a phrase derived not in an attempt to construct a practical metaphor in light of gasoline's combustible properties, but is instead derived directly from the hit movie Zoolander in reference to freak gasoline fight accidents.

equivalent of your etymologogical research

P.P.S.

quote:

Definition of ETYMOLOGY

1
: the history of a linguistic form (as a word) shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to another, by analyzing it into its component parts, by identifying its cognates in other languages, or by tracing it and its cognates to a common ancestral form in an ancestral language

P.P.P.S.

Actual Etymology of "German"

Okay, I have slept on it, and I have determined that perhaps I did get a tad bit heavy-handed as to your silly notion as to the the source of "Germans."

quote:

Right. It wasn't your silly notion, you just picked it up from a bunch of morons on Tiger Rant. I was wrong to claim that you invented it. My bad.

quote:

I didn't claim that the dictionary is for idiots. It is, but I didn't claim that last night. Thank you for correcting my omission. As to quoting twice from an "actual" slang dictionary, give me a fricking break you stupid bitch. Anyone can add anything to that dictionary. And what, exactly, makes it an "actual" slang dictionary, if it's on the web and anyone can add anything to it? Your actual source is a schmuck named chupon. You quoted him . . . twice. Just look up your esteemed source, chupon:
quote:

Man that is genetically fused with ghouda cheese.

Chupon smells like cheese.
chupon

Dude, you quoted a man fused with Gouda cheese, and he misspelled Gouda. Is that the kind of thing on which you normally rely when attempting to form and support an argument? Really?!?!

quote:

First, YOU ADMITTED that Goebbels was well-known for delaying the truth!! Why should I prove something to you that you already admitted you know?!?!

Second, this is not some obscure piece of history. This is a well-known fact. Even during the invasion of Iraq, newscasters and and anchormen made repeated references and comparisons to Baghdad Bob and Goebbels failures to present timely news updates. I can't believe I am having to even say this to someone with a college education.

Third, Putty posted the exact same information before I did. Putty is not just some random poster on the Rant. To the contrary, he is quite possibly the smartest poster on this or any other board. Good God man, Putty has won Droppie Awards!! Moreover, he is not fused with any cheese, particularly not Gouda, one of the least intelligent cheeses on the face of the earth. (I acknowledge that Putty may have been associated with and possibly connected to cheeses of various varieties and flavors; however, it has never been fully established, to me knowledge or beyond a reasonable doubt, that he was actually fused with any cheese.)

Fourth, I think Putty has irrefutably refuted your source and methodology for determining the "etymology" of the word "Germans."

Good day to you, sir.
