Have any of you had any positive (or negative for that matter) experiences with taking this herbal supplement?

Will increase serotonin...don't take if you're on an SSRI.

St John's Wort is actually going to decrease serotonin because it decreases the amount of that SSRI working in the body. Its whats called a "P450 Inducer" which basically means it will cause many other drugs to have LESS of an effect.

Not sure about its therapeutic effects though

More explanation:
P450 is a liver enzyme that breaks down many drugs so they can be excreted from the body. Certain drugs/supplements "induce" this enzyme meaning it increases its activity. So if you take SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, antipsychotics, benzos, some anticonvulsants, and oral contraceptives St John's Wort will make P450 break these down more quickly. So theoretically you'd need to take a larger dose of these drugs if you took St John's Wort to get the same therapeutic effect, but doing that on your own is not recommended because of the side effects of these drugs when you take too much or too little

Apologies. I looked up St John Wort today just to make sure I was right in my response. And while it is a P450 inducer and my explanation of that is correct, I also saw that St Johns Wort increases serotonin receptors (which I had never heard of before). So while St Johns Wort would decrease the effectiveness of an SSRI by increasing the speed of its breakdown, it would also increase serotonin receptors thus decreasing the amount of serotonin needed to get a response. So it would kind of balance things out but by how much, your guess is as good as mine.

If St Johns Wort is used as a stand alone, it would increase how quickly and how easily you see the effects of serotonin (natural serotonin made in our bodies). It wouldn't increase the amount of the serotonin. For example, it's like one person painting a house versus 10 people painting the same house. The house will get painted much faster and they will get more houses painted (more frequent effects of serotonin). Think of the paint as serotonin. The amount of it doesn't change depending on the # of painters unless they go on to paint another house in which case you need more.

In conclusion, St Johns Wort will increase the speed of the effects of the body's natural serotonin effects in someone on no other drugs. When you are on certain drugs, St Johns Wort becomes murky.

So again apologies Eli
