Running Injury/general anti-inflammatory/pain reliever philosophy question

Tried out some new shoes last week on a 3 mile run. They sucked. Ended up running the last mile barefoot. The next day, went on a 3.5 mile walk. I do remember rolling my ankle on a root going up a hill at about the 1/2 mile mark, but it seemed very, very minor, not even painful, didn't slow me down. Later that evening, it stiffened up real tight, a little painful to put weight on, but I still figured it'd be better in the next day or so. Its now been 8 days and hasn't gotten any better....I haven't run since, but haven't really taken it easy otherwise.
My thought is that pain serves a purpose, so I haven't taken any type of pain reliever. I didn't want to have a false sense of healing, and then make it worse by running on it. So now, I'm worried it might be a little more severe somehow...but I can't pinpoint a moment that would have caused this level of discomfort for this long.
Should I just take the ibuprofen for a couple days and see if it gets better? Or is it time to go to the doc?
