I wanted to play Royal Hawaiian but their website says the range is closed "until further notice". I called to see were they expecting days? Weeks? Months? just to get an idea of what to expect and the guy was a total arse...."What part of until further notice don't you understand? We will notify all visitors when it reopens."

The other thing I noticed was their restaurant is closed and I wasn't about to ask him how long they epxected that to be closed so I have turned my sights to Ko Olina which isn't that much more expensive.

I like the allure and uniqueness of Royal Hawaiian and plan to play another round over at Kaneohe to get some of the beach / occean vibe so my question is; should I opt for Royal Hawiian with no range or on site restauraunt or Ko Olina where the family can meet me after for lunch and make more of a day of it?

I played Ko Olina a couple times when I lived in Hawaii. It was amazing. Saw wild hogs while playing. Its awesome.

Ko Olina was fine and it was in great shape, but to me it was just a normal golf course that I feel like you could find in Florida. nothing special. Royal Hawaiian was absolutely beautiful though and way more challenging. The scenery was nothing like I had ever seen before. If I get a chance to go back, without a doubt I would want to play Royal Hawaiian again over Ko Olina. I will say though.. Royal Hawaiian first 3 or 4 greens were unplayable as of last July when I played it, once you got past those it was great.

Thats pretty much what I was thinking

Is the golf course that much better on a day I would play by myself (meaning no friends or family just me being paired up) and having no range access or post round dining?

ETA: I've played a course in the Philippines which reminds of me RH without the mountain lanscape

To me. Royal Hawaiian was just that much more special for me. I still remember certain shots, because of the uniqueness of the course.

Ko Olina the only shot I remember was on 18 trying to go over the water feature they have and I left it short and ruined my score haha.

Ko Olina might be better for the family aspect but Royal Hawaiian was just that more special to me because of the scenery.

I’ll try to figure out how to post photos later.

Royal Hawaiian is also way tougher, you will lose a lot of balls if you aren’t somewhat decent. So that might be another factor to consider.

Thanks for the pics; this kind of settles it for me with Ko Olina. I'm a 10 so I don't mind difficult and I am bringing my clubs to packing extra balls isn't a problem I just don't think the course is that rare / unique / special enough to outweigh no on site dining, no range and an a-hole pro shop attendant.

Not sure if you feel like heading to the North Shore, but Turtle Bay is my favorite course on Oahu…
