re: Anyone play Greystone lately?

It’s likely GHIN rounds if I had to guess. Brec definitely gets more public hackers who don’t have GHIN. The point was that Greystone gets plenty of play and the small fairways exacerbate the issue of tight lies.

If I had to guess, I’d say Greystone is in the mid to upper 30K for rounds. Carter is probably more than that (40K). Copper is probably a little less than Greystone.
And the BREC courses are at insane levels of rounds.
The majority of the rounds come when the weather is nicer (October - May) when the grass is dormant to semi-dormant. There’s to bounce back by the fairways and they become a tight mat to a bare surface. And every year it takes them longer and longer to wake up. The rough on the cart path side of the fairway is non existent most of the year.
Livingston Parish doesn’t have the best soil to begin with (not compared to a place like the Island) and their 2 courses are the most popular.

Incorrect, Cody told me they did 50,000+ last year. That is a ton for 18 holes.

That’s not golf. That’s something else.
If a course gets more than 30k rounds, it just becomes a parking lot….literally.
The nice courses around the country are nice for a reason….they control the play. Either through scheduling or price or both. They cater to the course first and the golfer second. And when you cater to the course (through maintenance, rest, COP, etc) you are catering to the golfer.
50k rounds is almost too many for 2 courses!

I agree Bones, hard to keep grass growing with numbers like that.

In the last 20 years we’ve lost:
Shenandoah
Sherwood
Fairwood
Briarwood
Howell
Dumas
Gonzales CC
West side
Bluffs
and basically LSU
That’s a lot of rounds that’s gotta go somewhere. Money is great, but the product suffers.

quote:It’s not because of less than 50k rounds. An article from 2010 in Golf Atlas had Pebble Peach at more than 50k rounds. Their maintenance budget and schedule means they are literally cutting grass between golfers every week and sometimes daily. Of course, most public courses around the country can’t handle that amount and look that good. But let’s not pretend the nice courses are nice because they don’t get played often.

ETA: I realize pebble is anecdotal but I chose a public course where I could find some data. Think of any destination course: Bandon, Pinehurst, Whistling, TPC courses, etc. All those places support 4-man groups 12 hours per day for most of the year with very few rounds being canceled even due to weather. It’s the money they have that’s the difference.

You are describing why I like playing here so much. Really the only course in the area that makes you hit so many different clubs off the tee.
Posted on 3/24/25 at 11:49 am to ell_13
Pebble starts at 4:30 in the morning with a 40 man crew in an environment that the grass grows year round and $700 a round. Schedule and/or price….Name a course around here like that.

You make a good point. It has helped my game travel if you can be disciplined enough to keep that same mentality elsewhere. Using 4 different clubs off the tee on par 4s and 5s because you have to isn’t appealing to most who just want to hit driver 14 times, but it can really help your game if you embrace it.

Oh absolutely, I typically play about 5 to 6 different clubs of the tees not including par threes...
We played yesterday morning, but we had 8 of us and the rest of the group wanted to do a 2man cart scramble.. So I got to swing away a lot more than I normally would..
But yeah on my own playing there I really don't hit driver on many holes there.

You are the one who brought up nice courses around the country claiming that they are nice because they limit play. I’m glad you now agree that there’s way more to it than that and it has much more to do with resources.

$35M/year in revenue alone from green fees. Probably a maintenance budget of 10-20% of that. Probably a ton of walking from golfers.
There is nothing comparable for this area. The mindset is always run them through as much as you can and bitch about a course that gets minimal attention. When the mindset changes, the results change.

I didn’t say “limit” play. I said “control” the play. Big difference.

So keep the 50k+ rounds or don’t?

You brought up Pebble, a Mecca for climate, environment and beauty. Nothing resembling this area. Apples to apples.
If you want to be difficult, we’ll go round and round.
Everything I stated is true. Sorry if it offended you.

I brought up Pebble for the reasons I described then added that it applies to nearly every destination course throughout the country. Did you miss that part?
