Xbox One Controller Question

I've had my Xbox One for a couple years now. The controller that came with it has been ok, but after a short while, the D pad and one of the bumpers became less responsive. Picked up Dark Souls 3 this weekend and I feel like every button will need to be 100% if I plan to get good. Have the newer controllers gotten better, or is the elite controller worth the extra cost?

The elite controller makes everything else seem like junk.

For an average gamer (sports, shooters, etc), what is the difference? Response time?

Look it up.
It comes with different length thumbsticks so you can tailor it to your liking and other trigger mechanisms.
Also has software to let you customize it further.
The build quality is also night and day different
