Xbox gifts for son - storage and controller

Help this old man please. My teen(14) has a birthday coming up. He never asks for anything. He mentioned a way to add storage to an Xbox One. I am assuming an external hard drive? Can someone point me to something I can order fast? And, if I need any adapters or anything else.
Also, what's the favorite controller these days?
Thanks for the help.

Xbox elite or scuf controller if he’s playing shooters
Any external drive will work as far as I know

Any USB 3.0-capable storage will work.
This one from Seagate is what we have at our house.
With all of the games with gold games, I'm starting to run out of space on that one. Maybe a 4TB would have been a better buy.
Seagate also has "gaming storage" drives that are XBox branded and are more expensive, but they're the exact same thing. Don't waste the extra money.
ETA: This article has some good tips.

Luckily, the console supports the use of external drives, making it easy to expand your storage space for games and other content. External drives must be at least 256GB and support USB 3.0 on Xbox One. Slower USB 2.0 drives are not supported, ensuring data will transfer very quickly between your console and the drive.
When choosing a drive, your first consideration should be storage space. The console has a 16TB limit on external storage size, rendering most drives compatible. For most, 1TB externals provide a welcome boost, ideal for those on a budget. Making an upgrade to 2TB offers more flexibility, while 4TB and 8TB prove overkill for many.
Entry-level 1TB and 2TB drives are an excellent upgrade for first-time buyers.

I'm not sure they would be compatible in that way. If it specifically says PS4 or XBox One, I would assume it would not work with the other system.
You'll save yourself like $30 by getting the one I linked, and it truly does do the same thing. We plug and played. Just make sure when he sets it up that he chooses "games & apps." I don't remember what the other option was, but that selection is not reversible.
Here's a tutorial
