Switch Bluetooth headset question

I’m very confused. My son has a headset that seemingly can only be used when Switch is handheld. I can’t seem to find a straightforward answer in if there are headsets that work well while docked and playing on the TV.
I feel like he should be able to play while docked to the TV and using a headset. But how?
Please excuse my ignorance.

Some headsets work if you connect the Bluetooth adapter to the dock via one of the USB ports on it.

Turtle beach headsets will work docked if you plug the dongle into the usb port on the dock.

This is what I did 3yrs ago.
Will work with any bluetooth headset.
You can also just out the usb soundcard with BT on dock if docked.
