So I got a Gear VR headset for Christmas and its both cool and disappointing.
The good: $99 price tag is great for those that have compatible phones. It gives you a taste VR without breaking the bank. There are a some very cool free/cheap games/apps available from the app store. Its light and comfortable. The resolution on the games is pretty good. Some apps do give that feeling of being present somewhere else. It hard to describe unless you've tried VR. The head movement is smooth with no lag.
The bad: The resolution on most of the recorded stuff is pretty bad. There are tons of beautiful scenes and cool videos to look at but most of them are like looking through a screen door or worse. It burns through my Galaxy S6 battery in about 30-45 minutes but it usually overheats it first. The controls on the side of the unit works okay but a blue tooth controller is better and is required for some games. I got a cheap Moga and it works fine.
Overall I think its a good buy if you have a phone that works with it and you are are interested in trying VR and getting a glimpse at whats to come. Once the resolution improves (maybe with 4k displays) to a point where the images are crystal clear than I think the tech will really knock peoples socks off.
