Rockstar has been seduced by microtransactions. I worry that they are no longer the same company.
Literally every DLC in GTA online was free.

Count me in the group that thinks the GTA games have mostly run their course with their standard formula.
I've got and played completely through all the major GTA console releases since GTA3.
GTA 4 and 5 were certainly fine, but really just more of the same. Bigger more detailed worlds, more impressive graphics, slightly better mission variety, all that jazz, but almost nothing I hadn't seen before. Just GTA done bigger and better. Travis was certainly cool, I'll give them that.
I enjoyed RDR much better than either of the last GTA games. It had a lot of similarities of course but because the setting was much more interesting (old west vs. yet another city). Also the story tried to be a little bit more down to earth. GTA games are very over the top, almost cartoonish and satireish, which works very well for them, but does get old. RDR also was more focused. It had some side stuff to do but not nearly as much. The side stuff was also all high quality. GTA games almost drown you in side stuff. Obviously you can ignore it if you want, but I sort of am a completionist type so GTA games feel like a chore at times, especially since some of side stuff in GTA games can be pretty awful.

That's exactly the point
I recently did a replay of GTA V, like last month, and it was crazy how a five-year-old game is still so accurate this far ahead in time.

I did a RDR playthrough in Nov/Dec and this is tough to agree with. RDR has all the gang shootouts, outfits, hunting, gathering quests and that's before you even bring up the stranger missions. I will say that the spaceship submarine collection quests to 100% GTA V were fricking horrible.
I do think the writing of the sidequests was better in RDR though. I always have loved the Mysterious Man cutscenes and the 'American Appetites' sidequest.
GTA V's were fine, IMO. But some of the stuff required to platinum that game were ridiculous.

Oh I know the over the top nature of GTA games is on purpose and it works good for that series. I'm just glad they went with a different tone for RDR and am anticipating RDR2 has a similar tone and feel.

For some reason I thought it was coming in November, so this is like they pulled it up. Sweet!

was to be expected but I was really hoping for that "spring 2018" deadline to be true.

It's so frustrating that they don't release these on PC.
