Previous progress on a game that is now a Playstation Plus free game

I played a good portion of Mafia 3 a year or more ago when I Redbox'd it.
Just downloaded the PS+ free game this month and it is starting me from the very beginning of the game as if I've never played before.
It won't allow me to load a previous save either.
In the trophy section of my PS4 it is showing me with 52% of the trophies for this game, so I have clearly played this title before.
Is this how it always works with the PS+ games or am I doing something wrong?

I would think that as long as you kept your save game data it would have let you pick back up. You may have deleted that and not realized it.

Same thing happened to me but I wasn’t that far. Honestly don’t know what happened to the save file. Didn’t matter because it had been so long since I played it I didn’t remember much in the story.

Check your saved game data on the cloud and if the save from a year ago is there upload it to the ps4.
