Long story, but my dad bought my older son a Switch for his birthday last year. Then at Christmas he bought him the Switch 2. Wish I had known he was going to do this since half the stuff I bought him for Christmas were things he wanted for the Switch. But that's besides the point.

What I want to do is clean off the Switch so that his younger brother can play on it. I'm not sure how the syncing of progress on games works on these. Is it even possible for me to set up a different profile for little brother, yet still have the same games we have purchased available as separate games on each, so they can each have their own progress in games without it messing each of them up? I'm thinking about stuff like Minecraft where there is a lot of open play and they like to get online and play together. Or is there something else I am missing here? For example, is the progress on certain games like Minecraft housed on a Minecraft server instead of Nintendo?

I'm not a Switch expert but isn't there a process to transfer everything from a Switch 1 to a Switch 2? I vaguely remember that being part of the marketing for Switch 2.

Nintendo knew most people buying a Switch 2 likely had a Switch 1 already and they had a pretty straightforward way to "copy" everything from the 1 to the 2.

However I don't know how that will work if the 2 is already been in use a while.

Found his guide from Nintendo themselves...

https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/transfer-guide/

The process that makes the most sense to me would be to fully transfer over everything from the 1 to the 2, verify everything is fully present all runs and looks fine on the 2, and only then essentially "wipe" the switch 1 and establish it as a separate thing for the new owner?

Yeah the transfer over to the 2 was simple, but we've bought another few games since then. Older brother seems to think that it won't work having the same games on both but I wasn't sure.

Switch 2 is fully backward compatible. Everything you got for the Switch 1 should work on the Switch 2, including controllers and games.

If by "clean off" you mean remove everything from it to start over, I would absolutely not do that.

You can set up a Nintendo Online family account. It's a little more expensive than the normal accounts but still very cheap (like $90 a year range with the expansion pack included). This allows them each to have their own "account" and still play online.

For physical game cards, you can easily share those between consoles. They just can't play at the same time unless you purchase a second physical copy of the game.

For digital game cards, you can also share those between consoles using the "virtual game card" function. In this instance, they both CAN play at the same time. You just need to keep the console that has "received" the shared game online and disconnect the console that "lent" the shared game offline.

We have a Switch 1, a Switch OLED, and a Switch 2. Using the Nintendo Online family account you can do pretty much anything you want. Can only share the games between 2 consoles though (and over the same wifi network) so would need physical copies for more consoles. Can also change which 2 consoles are "connected" so even that isn't set in stone.

Great, that is what I'm looking for. We've only got the two, so that should work fine. I just wasn't sure if wiping it was the way to go and wanted to make sure what steps to take.

I think wiping it would be the worst of all the options. I would recommend trying literally anything else first.
