quote:Depends on what emulator you are running. Mame, Nintendo, Atari all ok - you run Nintendo 64 or PS1 games you'll start to see the thermometer.I run a cheap personal fan over mine while playing anything. I have a couple of case fans on order.
That looks like a good setup. I see one of the reviewers complaining about it not having a fan. Is that something I should be worried about?

Ok IF you are interested in a Raspberry Pie arcade. Here are a couple of links.
I'm not going to post any direct links, because it looks like I am an affiliate. I am not.
Canakit - search them where you want. Fantastic company.
Get a gaming kit. It includes 2 lame-arse chinese Nintendo controllers. You can test everything with them.
Gaming images - Arcade Punks. Again no link, you have to figure things out for yourself. Get used to it.
Torrent - Go for it, dumbass. If you are making an arcade buy a newshosting account and download binary image via NZB. Or, torrent and virus infect everything you have.
It's around 30 bucks. If it makes it easier, you can download porn as well.
Get a 64gb card and burn this image to it.
Ok, linking the page that links the image. LINK

I recommend - news hosting dot com. No affiliate link, but great binary retention for image downloads. They even give you a client - once you get your NZB link, double click and your download begins. Great for gaming images.

Faster and reliable. I use an M.2 SSD to USB adapter for my PiHole DNS. The controller on an SSD makes Raspian so much more stable.

That's pretty neat actually. I got burned out on the heavy weights on the cabs I was building, I quit using MDF and went to Cab grade plywood. I dropped CRT monitors in favor of LED TV. (hell they are cheaper now) and added scanlines if/when customers requested.
I have Chattanooga Pinball near me, I use to be able to get really good deals for fricked up gutted cabs. A lot easier and cheaper than building something and they would throw in monitors, my cab is an old NFL Blitz 2000 cab that is in TMNT art I had done online. I usually only built controls to what I wanted. Hadn’t made a new cab in awhile and I heard they jacked up prices since they moved into their new building and the arcade bar scene took off.

You live in Chattanooga? Some reason though you stayed in NC. Not like it is far off.
Chattanooga is such a great town.

I work over there a ton, but still based in Chattanooga, been looking for property out that way to spend more time out there. I do talk up vacationing out in West NC a lot. I love Chattanooga, it's a fun little town with a lot to do.

Ok, but it's a rats nest in there, will try to get some tonight. I spent a lot of time wiring the ipac up, but then got to the RGB wiring and said frick it cause I wanted to play it.
My computer in there needs a new case pretty bad too, I ripped it apart and got fans held on with zipties. I couldn't fit my old Define in there, too wide.

2nd reply to this post, but new info. I monitored my temp while playing NEO-GEO and CPU intensive arcade games. Never topped 125F without a fan. My cheapo fans came in - 9 bucks for 2 - that run off GPIO pins of RP3, never topped a buck twenty. Well within hardware specs. (good luck finding them in Farenheit! But the system util gives you both so no worries.) Been playing Metal Slug 1 for a couple of hours now without fan - topped at 124F.
So, the little amazon fans are nice (again, 2 for 9 bucks from several dealers) but they aren't deal breakers. I think I would be fine without them, for arcade games anyway.
EDIT: When I build my bartop I'm going to blow any electric DC fan I can dig up over the RP3 - even then I think it will be overkill.

quote:Yeah I'll try as well. Again mine is a rats nest - I had no wiring harness and using Happ controls it was all hand-made jumpers from each microswitch. That was a LONG night. I woke up very hungover and everything worked. Ultimarc IPAC keyboard encoders are a wonderful thing. The built in shorcuts for "Enter" "Escape" etc. makes entering/exiting games very easy, from a Windows OS standpoint anyway.

[/img] Told you it was a rats nest. Works fantastic. This is recycled material from original cabinet, cheesy little wires and everything. Ignore the glass of scotch and ashtray.

Man that isn't bad. I was thinking worse. The layout for custom builds is just as hard as the actual work/craftsmanship. I have a little thing with building furniture out of sinker cypress. Basically turned my garage into a woodshop. Layout takes so much much time. So throw wiring layout into that and it is a nightmare. Sometimes it is okay to cut corners with wiring just to get the build over with.
Might take up a custom cabinet/MAME build. It always looked fun but i'm just a few years outside the arcade era. My grandparents opened an arcade in the late 80s. I do remember it having 52 cabinets but I was so young I could only play 1 game in Centipede. Just because of the controls. Was only 3-4yrs old at the time.
Did you post the display used in your cabinet? I probably missed it. But both you and Dam Guide don't use CRTs?

quote:You should, especially if you are a skilled woodworker. They are amazing, once done, and options are endless. Let me know if you do - I have a quality T-molding router bit that I will send you free. I think nice T-molding separates the men from the boys :) I'll just buy my cab material pre-made and pre-slotted now. That, and I gave my routing table to my future son-in-law.

quote:I will never use anther CRT again, because of the weight, burn-in, etc. I have a couple of old ones pulled from old cabs I'm going to pay extra at the landfill to dump I am sure. They are burned in so bad you can read the high scores with no power. The cab I posted has a 32" Vizio LED TV. It's light, and I can use it as an actual TV in the basement with a SAT receiver.

Edit to add scanlines - I'm not sure about RP3 images yet, but most MAME builds you can add the scanlines if you want true nostalgia for CRT. It's in MAME config.

Recommendations for joystick and buttons?

That's a tough call, I'm very opinionated. I love the old school Happ buttons and joysticks with an IPAC controller. In fact, if building a cab/bartop/cocktail I'm not sure I'd go any other way. With a Windows machine, not a Raspberry Pie.
I do love the LED lit buttons and 4/8way joys available on the cheap on Amazon lately. On Windows based builds they show up as USB joysticks/controllers, and work fine even from MAME tab config menus. Yes, you can use two encoders and still configure MAME.
