May the good blood guide your way.

I strongly advise against following even a progression guide like I did. I started following one abiyr halfway through my first playthrough and regret it.

I get pretty far then slip up. I wish I could return to the hunter's dream area and buy vials and head back but it resets every single thing.

Do you get to level up your character at the end of the level or what the hell?

Even if you don't beat the first boss you come across, just seeing it will give you your first Insight and you'll be able to level up then.

This. There's also an item called madman's knowledge that's scattered around on some dead bodies. If you find on of those, consume it for insight and then you can start leveling up before you even encounter a boss.

Yea., most people get insight by getting to cleric beast, bt anything that gives you insight can level you up, so getting to father g, or cleric will allow you to talk to the doll and level up, you don't have to beat them.

Got there. Guess I need to just grind and level up some before trying to beat him.

Two hints, molotolvs, and Dodge/roll left.

Also an important mechanic in this game is the rally mechanic. A lot of people at first want to run away and heal after taking damage, but if you immediately attack aggressively after taking damage you can rally most of not all of your health back while attacking, saving the vials for when you can't rally your health.

Its that mechanic alone that separates this from dark souls and once it clicks that you must be aggressive in this game the entire game changes for the better and you start to enjoy it way more.

There's a definite moment this happens for most players, and it's usually at father gascoigne.

Once it clicks it hooks you in pretty hard and becomes a blast to play

Leveling up before cleric you should focus on VIT (HEALTH) and whatever attribute your weapon is scaling with so you have more damage output (str for axe, skl for cane and str or skl for cleaver)

honestly, the first run in central yharnam was incredibly difficult for me too. easily the hardest part of the game until i hit a snag recently much much later. and i sunk over 150 hrs into dark souls 3.

that first area really really sucks.

I gave up when this game first came out because of that area, and the very next one.

In hindsight it's a great starting area bc it forces you to "git gud" and master it, and once you are able to do it, the game starts really moving.

It's crazy bc I had so much difficulty when I first played it (i would give up playing after 10 deaths or so), and now I can start a BL4 character and barely even get touched the entire first 3 areas. I could probably do a no-hit run until the forbidden woods if I tried hard enough.

So last night I got 'kinda gud" and beat the beast on the bridge and Father G. Things started clicking as I leveled up for sure. I went with the battle axe so I have been focusing basically everything in Vit and strength. Last night I made it to "Old Yharnam" and saved so I could get some sleep.

The game is pretty interesting in the fact that I have no idea what the hell is going on. I also have no idea what any items do. I just throw molotovs from time to time and use the blood vials for health. I do understand upgrading the weapons with the stones or whatever. I believe I saw there is one item that you "eat" and it gives you more blood echoes? Or was I just half sleeping?

Yes. There are different kinds, but use them if you need some extra echos to level up or buy some vials/molotovs.

DONT smash them all just because, since you run the risk of losing them.

Old Yharnam is a bitch but alot of fun! Dont be afraid to do suicide runs to see what lies ahead, then plan accordingly.

Also, the story is primarily in the item description details, so read everything you pick up. Youll start to see how items relate to environments, characters, and the overall story.

So should I just use them when I am returning to the hunter's dream to use for leveling up?

Yes it is. Especially for bosses. They seemed to get a little easier when I'd run in, dodge around, and try to learn their moves and not waste any vials.

Boss runs where you don't plan on trying to fight them is great advice too. Just run in that fog door. Watch them, notice the patterns. Try a few attacks and dodges. Do this a few deaths, then go in and try to fight them. It will work wonders.
