Just missed it with the story.
I don't think it was that bad...just long periods of grinding because the game was hard as fricking shite you would spend forever leveling up and then forget that there was a story

Turn based encourages you to use all your abilities and skills. Real time encourages you to bottom mash more.

Realistically their best days are behind them but hopefully they have something left in them for the future. Square has had some serious identity problems the last few years and they shows signs of figuring it out.

agreed. real time adds some tension though. for ff right now I prefer turn based, I didn't realize this would be such a button smasher. only once real time combat can bring everything to the table that turn based brings will turn based be a thing of the past.

I agree with every word of this.

personally, I think FF is a series that needs to go backwards. it's as if they feel the need to deliver next gen graphics. why can't they make one with prerendered backgrounds but sharper and better looking than before. I never thought of FF as being a series that needed to push the limits of next gen hardware

I wouldn't necessarily call it a button masher since you're suppose to hold circle down to attack, not mash repeatedly. The only button I press during combat is triangle to warp occasionally and x to jump.

FF has always been known for their gorgeous cut scenes. I know I used to think of them as cutting edge with graphics.

Pressing it gives you quicker more acrobatic attacks or maybe it's the weapon I'm using

Wait you hold the button down to attack? Like inquisition?

They were. They can keep high end cutscenes. I'm just saying at a certain point the hardware passed them by

X was my favorite but i think making a great game in that style is too hard. I think open world could be great but their sandbox approach to it was wrong

Yeah, I didn't know it at first but found it out on the subreddit. You just hold O to attack and to block you hold square.

You can do both. Holding it exposes you more but each successive strike piles on damage

That's my take. Combat moves so quickly I'm not registering the effects of what I'm doing. Plus countering is sloppy and adds another thing to track on screen

That's concerning for me because I hated holding down r2 all the time in dragon age

So you thought they should go more linear?

You don't have to hold down O if you don't want. You can mash it lol. I like that you can hold it down though. My thumb gets tired.

Not necessarily.

Take the same open world from this game. Point A is east, point Z is west. You can experience the same world and explore but at points along the way the story progresses. At point Z you get the air ship at which point the world is more accessible because you don't have to walk everywhere. At that point the game becomes a sandbox style game where your objectives take you all over

I see it as the natural step to next gen. Kind of like taking X...but making it open world.

I'm trying to think of a game with good open world combat. It's tough because you don't want it to be too easy and get boring but if it's too tactical and slow then it can discourage exploring.

I hated how linear x was. I liked the game but it was only open right at the end.

Well I guess that's my point make it accessible but at the same time encourage point A to point B to point C to point D and don't make getting around so easy at the beginning. Go too far and you're not prepared and you get slaughtered

But I'm not talking about linear. X was the long journey/trek

You can have an open world AND do that. That's the nature evolution in my mind. However, the next best option is going back to the ps1 style enhanced graphics of course but not hyper realistic, but with hyper realistic cutscenes

Just did Castlemark tower. That was a long, painful experience.
