The Nitro Refueled one? I saw it for sale online earlier for $29.99 and thought about pulling the trigger. How does it compare to the Sonic one? How do they compare to Mario Kart? I know MK is Nintendo exclusive so it’s out of the equation but the last Kart game I played was MK on the original Wii a decade or so again and that was only for a few hours. Before that it was whatever one was on N64.

It's definitely less casual of an experience than Mario Kart. All of the stats are determined by the character rather than the karts. I believe in Sonic, the stats can be modded, so there is much more customization than with CTR.
CTR has a lot more tech than MK8. Can't speak about Sonic in that regard. CTR has a much higher skill curve as a result.
CTR's online is pretty bad though. Even with a good connection, invisible, laggy items will hit you out of nowhere, leaving you wondering wtf just happened. MK8's online is much more smooth. Online is still fun to some degree if you like competitive kart racers like myself, but be warned that most of the people online these days know every trick in the book. Don't be discouraged I guess is what I am trying to say.
tl;dr - Get CTR if you enjoy competitive, high skill-curved kart racers. Otherwise, you may want to look more into the Sonic Kart Racers.
