I do these all of the time on my black stone griddle. My tools for smashing are simply a pancake spatula, i.e. oversized, and a potato masher. I push down on the spatula with the potato masher.
If you don't use parchment paper between the patty and the spatula then you should definitely oil the underside of the spatula so that you don't lift the patty when you remove the spatula. Spray oil works fine for this.
