Do restaurants (even nice ones) purposely not tell the price of specials and then frick you on the prices sometimes?

In my experience YES they do. I don't think I have ever bought a special that wasn't as much as the highest shite on the menu. I stopped buying the special simply for that reason. I stick to the menu items.

Maybe there is something wrong with me. Unless I was hosting a business dinner I always ask for the price on a special, if the waiter doesn't state it. Usually I will frown and say something like, "I missed the price on that."

If hosting a customer or business associate, I would never give a bad impression to a customer, by asking for prices. If it is just the wife and I, she is as likely as me to ask the price if the service person doesn't say it.

This is why I hate verbal specials—in the age of easy printing and cheap copiers, how hard is it to make a menu insert or table tent listing specials? Or at least a chalkboard or other signage clearly showing prices?

I want all the info on the menu, dammit.
