For me it's briquettes for smoking, lump for grilling.
I like lump for grilling because of the hotter temps you can get for a great sear.
I like briquettes for smoking because of the even size, even burn, and they tend to last longer and catch easier using the Minion method.

All of this for the same reasons. Even though I'm a snake method guy rather than minion

Done several briskets and pork butt on the kettle. I stack charcoal bricks 2x2 around the edge and leave about 6 inche gap. Sprinkle wood chips around the ring. Add 5-6 white bricks to one end. Bottom vents all the way open, top vent about 25% open. Holds 225-230 for 12 hours.
