Grilling salmon on cedar plank

Been wanting to try salmon grilled on a cedar plank.
Bought a cedar fence board at Lowes and cut it up to make planks like you see in the stores.
The board is supposed to be prime cedar but now I’m having second thoughts about if it would be treated with anything.
Has anyone ever used this type of cedar planks instead of the already cut to size store bought ones.
TIA

Yes I use them all the time. Soak them in water so all they do is char and smoke. Also you can reuse one if the only damage is a charred bottom. Just make certain the fence planks are not treated, which most are not.

And don’t put them directly over a flame.

Thanks. That’s what I’m concerned about. Sanded one side smooth, didn’t have any chemical smell.
Just wondering about fence plank vs a regular cedar board.

If you have soaked them really good you can put them anywhere you want to but just keep your eye on them. Of course I like my salmon very rare, not pink in the middle but red and translucent so they are never on very long. Directly over the fire causes the steam to quickly saturate the salmon with flavor and you can still take it off red and translucent. Best advice is experiment and find what you like best.

I put mine in the sink full of water the morning I'm going to use them and let them soak all day.
Works great, I usually buy the more expensive ones at the store though.
Never thought about LOWES or Home Depot
