I really like nugget ice. I know the first gen of the Opal had some problems like noise and the drawer not being ergonomic. Does anyone own a gen 2 and what is your opinion? I have watched some reviews but like anything most people won’t admit they bought a piece of junk.

It works for a year or two and it will fail. Noise, not refilling because the system thinks the tank is full, etc. I had a version 1 and it failed because of the system said the tank was full. So I said well maybe the Gen 2 was better and I rebought the Gen 2. It was noisy but moved it to my laundry closet. When it failed again I was done.

I've had the opal since it came out through FirstBuild in late 2016.
Works like a champ with cleanings every 3-4 months

Looks like based on my water hardness GE recommends cleaning every three weeks

I run mine through a zero water pitcher filter prior to using for ice.
Very good at reducing cleaning frequency

I had the inline water filter they recommended and it did not help mine. My original was the First Build model. The second one I had and it included the exterior tank to reduce how many times you had to refill. It still failed. I did not get distilled water so maybe that would have affected its longevity.

So the wife (no pics) was reading yesterday that nugget ice made better smoothies and is less harsh on the blender. Long story short I pick one up at Best Buy today. We already use Zero Water pitcher so that should help. She has a smoothie before work everyday. I got the thing setup and it is making ice. Hope it holds up.
