It really does have a strong over powering sweet maple flavor. My favorite Crown is the Crown Cask. They age the whiskey for a year or two in a sherry cask. It's about $100 a bottle but very nice. Crown XR which is about $150 is just creative marketing. I think they just distill the whiskey one more time before aging it. There is a fine line between smooth and a whiskey having no taste at all.
