I use a butter dish, unrefrigerated, just like my mama did.

I have my mother in laws old one. Butter dish with a lid and it sits on the counter with a stick of whatever butter I have, salted, unsalted, homemade in it. Sometimes it has a piece of another stick mashed on top of it. Never spoils. Only goes in icebox when we go out of town.

My mother had a Sunbeam Bread butter dish with “It’s Batter Whipped” and the blonde bowhead girl eating a piece of buttered bread.

She also had a bunch of kids so in addition to the butter dish she had a small plate with another stick or two on it covered with a flour sack cloth.

We probably went through a couple pounds of butter and several loaves of bread a week. We also had Borden Milk delivered twice a week-2 gallons whole milk in glass bottles each time.

Long time ago.
