Thanks for the advice. I just had a couple of finished pieces involving Sean Payton that I did in paint and I wanted to get some feedback/tips on them but I did a search for "Sean Payton" and came up with no existing threads to put them in and I figured I shouldnt be starting new threads until Ive been here longer. Guess I will go ahead and do that though. And thanks for the compliment of the Osama gif.

Post it up here if you want suggestions. If you see a piece of artwork and wonder how it was done, you can ask here as well. Generally, someone will know how it was done. Now that doesn't mean it will be easy to replicate. Photo manipulation is a skill and you will improve with practice.

Speaking of that, I've been trying to figure out how to draw tears on a face. I'm thinking (of course) brush probably no bigger than 2 and use light grey for a color then fade it almost out? using Paintnet btw.
What say ye?

I have noticed that most people put their name on their work somewhere. Should I start doing that? If so, what is an easy way to do it? I could just write on it in paint but that would look awful, lol.

I have noticed you farking as greatly improved over the past few weeks. Keep up the good work.

I just start doing because all the good farkers do it. I have hopes of seeing it one on line or getting emailed to me in a chain mail but it will probably never happen, lol.

I have a quick question. Everyone knows I am fairly new at this. Is there a software besides Photoshop and GIMP that converts actual pictures to coloring pages? My boss wanted to convert a few to make a coloring book to give out to kids at her concerts. I used Photoshop, created a duplicate layer, posterized the layer and then grayscaled it. I think that was right. I used a tutorial video on Youtube as I was doing it. Then I had to go in and erase a lot of the shadows and create paths to darken some of the lines. Someone told me to convert the pics to Vector images and it would be easier but I couldnt get them to look right. I dont have a graphic pen so I was doing it with the mouse. Just wanted to see if what I did was the only option I had or is there something easier because I am sure there are a few more pics on the way
I put one up that I converted along with the original pic. TIA

I have not posted any of my work yet, but, like the opinion expressed by many others on here, this forum has had a huge impact on me. Really just wanted to post to say thanks to all of you for the help. I conisder myself a good photographer, and so my subject matter has always been my prime interest, photo editing really didn't interest me at all until I accidentally opened this forum when checking the Rant one day. I chose paint.net based on the information on here, and it has really opened a whole new world of creativity. At any rate, thanks!

That is actually about the best way to make monochromatic images. You are essentially going to have draw over the image even if you use Vector graphics. I saw your original request and was too busy to tackle the task.
I draw exclusively with the mouse. I invested in a graphic tablet and couldn't really get the hang of it. Drawing and watching the screen is a skill that requires practice. I would get frustrated and revert back to my current mouse technique.
Your drawing looks great. You could clean up the lines a bit using vector graphics but you have probably discovered the best method already.

Is the flv file sourced from a YouTube video?

it's a clip of virginia coach mike london saying "GD" on the sidelines of our game last season. london's speaking at all sorts of fca events and swapping bible verses with highly-regarded recruits from a christian school in va's tidewater area. one recently committed because of the bible verse thing. i hate hyprocrites.
got the file down to the 2sec of the broadcast that show him saying it. the first bit is messy, but i couldn't get the first bit (where the game is) to cut out. the freeware program i used to convert made it tiny and greenish when it went from flv to gif. my dad (vtdad) says you guys are the best of the best and if anyone knew what programs to use, it'd be you guys.

Did you try GIFSoup? Also, KeepVid will allow you to save the file in mp4 format. That might give you other conversion options that flv may not.
If all else fails, give me a link to the video and what section you want. I will put it into a GIF for you.

I use Bender Converter often. Sometimes Gifsoup does not seem to work properly. BC will give you one free conversion a day. I have used it for YouTube Videos but I believe you can do more with it. Pretty simple as well.

What is the best software (preferable free). Is Gimp legit? I've been using gimp and I like it but I don't want to miss out on any major features. What is Gimp lacking that others have?
Posted on 5/18/11 at 2:48 pm to RBWilliams8
Freeware? Nothing. Paint.net is more intuitive but if you are already using GIMP without problems, there isn't much out there for you without purchasing software.
