what tools do I need?
Is there a free tutorial or two on this process?
Are they called farks in the "real world" or only on TD?

Gimp is a Free Download.There are many Tutorals out there.It's very User Freindly.I judge this from me being able to learn enough to entertain myself without using Tutorals.I'm Lazy. 
Any Picture you have saved in your Pictues or My Documents can be used.Have Fun.And Yeh,Fark is the Universally Accepted Term.
