My work involves a lot of looking at plans.. and the newest job is huge.. Most plans come to me in either pdf or dodge format (dodge viewer, stupid program.. but it works).

This huge quantity of plans are all TIFs.. and when I open them and try to zoom/scroll there is about a 10-20 second delay for EVERY action. Any recommendations? I tried converting to pdf.. but the program I had for that apparently only lets you do about 50 before it asks you to buy.

Should I convert to something? (if so what, and what program to use)

Or do I need a better TIF viewer (if so what program do you use?)

TIA

My first questions to you are:

What program are you using to view the tifs..

What are your PC specs?

Is it possible for you to share a plan in tif format?

I was going to leave this alone as I only have a little experience with these files types. But as you're not getting a response...

TIF files are lossless, like PNG's. So they can be very large and really slow down a machine especially if you have an old computer. There are several options. If you have the entire ADOBE suite, you can export to PDF. I don't imagine you do as you said your program is only trial.

Get work to purchase that software? Depending on your company, you can usually make a case for software that you need/will make you more efficient.

There are other options. Free ones that you might try first. The software I use to edit photos, PAINT.net, has the capacity to save files as TIF's. That means it also has the capacity to change the format from TIF to JPEG. I don't know the detail you need as you lose resolution with JPEG but Paint.net is a free download so give a try. I have a link in the "teach a man to fish" thread.

Also, there is freeware called format factory. It converts many different file types. I use it for changing video types and audio.

Hope something there helped.
