Free easy to learn/use photo editor

What are your recommendations for free, easy to learn/use photo editing software that will let me do basic stuff like cloning, background fill, etc. on a very novice level.

I started on this and still use it today for the large majority of my basic farks. I mostly only open GIMP for gif work.

Most of the people I know who've gotten into photoediting started
out with GIMP. A lot of them continued to use it as their "weapon
of choice". I had some family photos I wanted to play around with and
try to improve as well as wanting to join in the fark craze that
was all over the internet (2004). I shelled out around $90 and
got Photoshop Elements, and I've continued to use that to this day.
I've never used any of the free stuff, but have friends that have and
are well pleased with some of the programs. Especially Gimp.

i started using paint.net. paint.net is a poor mans version of gimp. which is funny cause gimp is a poor mans version of photoshop.
