Can't change color of image in Photoshop CS

I purchased a watermark/personal logo off fiver recently. It was sent to me in a .jpg file instead of the regular .psd file. I'm no Photoshop expert, but I know that changing the color of something is a normally simple task. Each time I try to change the image color to something other than black or grayscale, I cannot. It simply fluctuates colors between black and light gray. I'm in RGB mode and still cannot do anything. Any ideas? Could it have something to do with the way the original .psd was saved and converted to a .jpg?

You sure you're in RBG mode? Sounds like you're in grayscale.

Positive. I messed with it for an hour and couldn't get it to change. Not sure what the problem is.

Open the image. Hit "control+U"; select "colorize"; then use your color replacement tool to make it whatever color you want.
There are other ways, but this is probably the quickest. You could do an overlay, too.

Gonna bump this in hopes that somebody would like to try and help out. I'm really struggling with the image mentioned above and cannot change the color or make transparent. I have a basic knowledge of photoshop, but can't seem to get anywhere with this thing.

I can try to take a crack at it.
