What exactly do you want to make? I use GIMP for all of my farks and there is a lot you can do with it (considering it is free).

Well I been trying to make some saints schedule backgrounds with the transparent backgrounds and a few other things but haven't really had any success. I guess I need someone to show exactly what its capable of doing. I'll just have to mess with it some more. I haven't even figured out how to make the beer labels......

Well, the capapbilities of GIMP (as well as photoshop and others) are too vast to list here. But I can tell you that for backgrounds with overlayed transparencies, you need to read up on "layers". A wallpaper would be 1024x768 roughly. You basically would start with a background layer. If you have a picture or image you want to use for the background, then just make sure it is about 1024x768 because you will loose resolution if you have to scale it up too much. If you are starting from scratch, just open a new file, make it 1024x768 and make it whatever color you want the background to be. Then you just add additional layers with whatever objects, pictures, etc you want. You can then adjust the transparency of each layer until you find the effect you are looking for.

Below is a sig pic I did for someone the other day. I started from scratch. The background was colored with a black to gray gradiant. It could have just as easily been a solid color. Then I took a pic of a roaring tiger and made it the next layer and adjusted the opacity (transparency) so it looked faded into the background. Next I added each player, the purple LSU and the win bar all as their own layer. What is nice about layers also is that you can go back and adjust any of the layers on their own (color, location of the object, transparency, etc.)

I know this all probably sounds confusing, but I hope it helps. Best thing to do is read up on layers and start playing around with it.

PS - When you save your file with layers in it, you will want to save it as an ".xcf" file first. Then save it as a ".jpg" for uploading to the internet or viewing it with any other progams besides GIMP.

Well put...best advice (from me) is to try and play around with everything. I don't have GIMP, so I would be little to no use as for as more advice.

Nice work Easy, xrock, Mark, notthatgood, and TX.

To be honest with you, that doesn't sound confusing at all. I have been opening pictures seperately and have been copying and pasting this whole time. Now I know what the "layers" are and how to use them. Thanks for the advice TXLSUCHE and I'll spend some time messing with it.
