They have stuck with him this long, he will not get benched. I mean he could easily finish the season as the #1 SS (Tulos health withstanding)

The in-depth "preseason" rankings are done.

As a reminder, it is really tough to separate some teams in a non-keeper league when everyone starts on even footing. I ranked each team's hitting and pitching, but the overall rank is not a composite ranking as you will see the teams with lower ranked bats tend to be near the bottom of the overall rankings. There truly are 12 teams that could win this league, and I only think that a couple at most are trailing behind the pack. If you are ranked #1, then that is the best in the category.

Here are the rankings summed up:

I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors. It was not worth editing 4,122 words.

Cringle berry

Hitting 12: As a newcomer to an auction, he only spent $141 on his bats. Nearly half of that money was spent on Giancarlo Stanton who cost a whopping $57. While I believe that Stanton will be the top player this year in fantasy, this is quite the cost to incur. I really like the Kinsler buy at $21, but Machado should have gone for less. However, I can understand reaching from time to time on a guy you really want. The rest of this lineup is pretty terrible for a 12 team mixed league, but it at least has a ton of speed. Yasmani Grandal could be a valuable asset with potential 20 home run power and a high BB rate.

Pitching 1: This staff is essentially the NL All-Star staff without Clayton Kershaw. Max Scherzer for $37, Zack Greinke $24, Matt Harvey for $24, Gerrit Cole for $15, and Garrett Richards for $13 (although he is obviously in the American League). This is an embarrassment of riches that makes this team an obvious lock to lead the league in ERA, WHIP, and QS. Beyond that, I love the James Paxton and Drew Pomeranz draft picks. They could be a solid SP4 or SP5 on a normal team. Greg Holland should be the best closer in the AL, but the save situation is dire after that (and he was acquired via trade).

Best picks: Ian Kinsler $21, James Paxton $2, Drew Pomeranz $1

Worst picks: The $118 spent on starters, Giancarlo Stanton $57, Manny Machado $17, A.J. Pollock $9

Outlook 12: This team is pretty bad right now, but the solution is obvious. Trade away two of your top five starters. With bats almost always in higher demand than pitching and the desperation of this team, it may be hard to get a great ROI. However, great in-season management, breakout players, and a little luck could right the ship.

Kd1036 – Tubby Terror Squad

Hitting 11: This is almost the exact opposite of a squad that I would have drafted, but there a lot of things I like about it. A lot ranking is not really indicative of anything, but I was not drafting Jose Altuve, Billy Hamilton, Kris Bryant, or Jorge Soler because I thought the preseason hype and cost of steals led to their cost exceeding their value. Despite some philosophical roster building differences, Tubby has counting stat fiend Yoenis Cespedes at only $21. I also love the Steve Pearce buy and not just because of his hot start. I believe in 20-25 bombs from him.

Pitching 3: We all know how amazing Mad Bum is. Even before his destruction of the Cardinals, I had complete faith of Arrieta as a fantasy ace. I think he could be a top 5 NL pitcher quite easily this year. I have no problem spending on Taijuan Walker, especially if you believe in his insane ceiling. However, dropping $8 on Giles was probably the worst pick of the draft. What team is actually going to trade for Papeldouche? Giles was my most overrated player this draft season. Saves will not be an issue at all as Rodney should be good for 40+ even if he does not repeat his 48 saves. Cody Allen is elite. The Benoit ruse was also quite funny. Well worth the buck.

Best picks: Yoenis Cespedes $21, Jake Arrieta $14, Cody Allen $11, Steve Pearce $5

Worst picks: Kris Bryant $21, Billy Hamilton $22, Ken Giles $8

Outlook 11: I feel like I dislike a lot of the pieces, but when this is put together, it looks pretty solid. There might be an overreliance on upside in the young Cubs, Walker, and the hope that Papelbon gets dealt. Tubby had a weird draft in my eyes, but it does not mean the team is bad.

Hullabaloo

Hitting 10: David Ortiz, Victor Martinez, and Adrian Beltre make up a good bit of this team’s offensive production and age. Their combined age is something like 110, but their combined home run total could be 80. I am huge believer in George Springer as a fantasy stud, but the price got too high for me at $28. In a 59 game stretch last season, Springer mashed 20 bombs. I absolutely love the J.D. Martinez pick, and I am disappointed that I do not own any stock in him this year. It would not surprise if he led the Tigers in HR. Drafting Jason Heyward is always an interesting gambit, but players seem to make jumps there. If Heyward ever has an MVP season, then it would sadly be with the Cards. While I was against paying for steals, Dee Gordon was $7 cheaper than Billy Hamilton and has 2B eligibility. I am not sure why Hullabaloo drafted Obudel Herrera who was probably on no one else’s radar.

Pitching 2: This staff is really deep with Chris Sale, Cole Hamels, and Alex Cobb on the mend. While I am not a Sonny Gray guy for his lack of strikeouts for his price tag, he started off with a bang. Gio Gonzalez could rebound in a huge way, but I am afraid he will not throw his curve as much as he ages because his usage and effectiveness dropped last year. Jose Quintana is a great SP5 (once Cobb returns) because he seems to only get better. Storen and Perkins should give Hullabaloo a decent amount of saves.

Best picks: Adrian Beltre $28, J.D. Martinez $13, Glen Perkins $7, Curtis Granderson $3

Worst picks: Sonny Gray $12, Salvador Perez $7, Jean Segura $5

Overall 10: This is a redraft ranking, so I could re-rank these teams and find it a couple spots higher. I think the old core and below average hitters has me thinking that this squad is about a half step behind the league average. The elite SP and the old man pop could easily sway my opinion.

Thomas – PED Easy as 123

Hitting 8: Eric Hosmer at first base is pretty laughable. I am not too confident that Zunino will breakout yet because I have yet to see him anything outside of a fastball. Neil Walker is a stud and one of the most underrated players in fantasy baseball. He is hitting cleanup behind some stud bats, and I think he goes 80/25/90 this year. Adam Jones, Yasiel Puig, and Ian Desmond should be the heavy lifters, but it looks like Todd Frazier could be part of that elite tier. Chris Carter may have the best chance in baseball out of anyone to get 40 homers this season. I like Oswaldo Arcia to hit 25 bombs this year. He hit 20 last year in just over 100 games. Gregory Polanco could turn into a $25 player if he becomes the next Starling Marte.

Pitching 8: Strasburg and Shark should be two well at the rotation, but I think it gets pretty thin quickly. Even before Ian Kennedy hurt his hamstring, I did not like him as an SP3. I think Carlos Martinez is of a name at this point and not ready to be a successful MLB starter. Personally, I would drop him because I fear terrible ratios. Like always, Thomas should have an abundance of saves even with the bad luck of Brett Cecil losing his job after one outing. Craig Kimbrel’s situation got even better by going to Petco because the park is very favorable to pitchers and he should have a couple more opportunities over the course of the season.

Best picks: Yasiel Puig $30, Todd Frazier $18, Neil Walker $7, Micah Johnson $1

Worst picks: Stephen Strasburg $31, Mike Zunino $8, Eric Hosmer $3 (he sucks)

Outlook 9: This is not my favorite team in the league, but I will never rank Thomas all the way at the bottom again. There is definitely enough talent to contend, but I think he may be a SP away even if Kennedy comes back okay and McHugh is not a one-time wonder.

Honkus – Hot Stove

Hitting 9: The best slugger in the AL leads this offense, and he already has started the season off strong with two bombs. The rest of the infield turned out with a great $9 value on David Wright and a chance for a 20-20 guy in Kolten Wong. I would have rather dropped the extra $4 to get Dozier (who is what could be), but there is nothing wrong with Wong. Prince at $17 was a steal compared to my assumed price at $22-$25. I do not like spending $14 on Ryan Zimmerman to only toss him in the OF. That is a fine price with a good third baseman, but not for an OF. In the upside category, Honkus invested a combined $41 in Bryce Harper and Joc Pederson. Harper was a strong value, but Pederson was too rich for my blood. If Rusney Castillo plays 130 games, then I think Honkus won that one, but I am still a fan of the Flying Hawaiian, so I am holding out hope that my boy can stay healthy (no offense to Honkus).

Pitching 5: Clayton Kershaw automatically moves the needle like 3 spots among the team pitching ranks. I cannot believe that he went for $48. That is more than Andrew McCutchen. However, he is a virtual lock to be the best pitcher in the game. Nothing else needs to be said. I love the Sean Doolittle snag at $5. His K/BB last season was stupid. He will be one of the best closers in the game if he returns from his injury at full strength. I guess Honkus already got his $2 worth of Joe Nathan with the one save, but he was smart and backed him up with Soria for a buck. I like both Smyly and Odorizzi at $4 a pop because they really could be excellent in the ratios. Honkus has a very similar staff in the sense that he has an ace and a bunch of cheap pitchers, but his SP2, SP3, etc. are probably better than my $1 and $2 picks.

Best picks: Bryce Harper $24, David Wright $9, Xander Bogaerts $6

Worst picks: Clayton Kershaw $48 (I understand the reasoning), Joc Pederson $17, Ryan Zimmerman $14

Overall 8: The difference between teams in a re-draft league is razor thin, and I could easily make the case to swap this team with quite a few around it. I did not love the strategy of paying a huge premium for Clayton Kershaw because I think Chris Sale or Corey Kluber could get close enough numbers and leave $20+ on the table. Regardless, Honkus is a good manager and the inaugural league champion, so it would be foolish to think of this team as anything less than a contender.

Rpg – Fighten’ Gonzos

Hitting 2: Andrew McCutchen was one of the hidden steals of the draft. He was easily $5 too cheap, and I almost kept going on him even though I spent serious coin already. I am not a Robinson Cano or Jose Reyes guy, but I have zero problems with their price. The Freddie Freeman hate because of his lineup has gone too far. The Braves were a bottom three offense with Gattis, Heyward, and Upton x 2 (well, one is addition by subtraction). I am still yet to mention Carlos Gonzalez or Buster Posey. Also, did we forget to keep bidding on Posey? He only went for $22. Outside of 3B and the second utility spot, this lineup is nasty.

Pitching 12: I really thought that I would have the worst pitching in the league, but this staff is in pretty rough shape. Zimmermann is a serviceable SP1 and Yordano Ventura certainly has big time upside, but I am not too interested in anyone else. I am million percent on Justin Verlander, but I guess you cannot argue with any $1 players. R.A. Dickey is a Russian roulette each start. Matt Garza is quite mediocre at this point in his career. Fister and Tillman are much better in real unfortunately. The closer situation is also a mess with Betances struggling and heading towards a committee and LaTroy gets 15% off when he goes to the movies.

Best picks: Andrew McCutchen $47, Freddie Freeman $25, Buster Posey $22, Alex Gordon $7

Worst picks: Rafael Soriano $1 and Wilin Rosario $1 are wasted roster spots

Overall 7: This team reminds me a bit of my own, but I think this team’s starting pitching has a slightly lower upside. Rpg is a natural trading partner with Cringle berry. Also, I would not mind this team adding a backup third baseman.

Prison Mike

Hitting 3: We have another team that spent all of its money on the bats. Josh Donaldson is an absolute stud and could 35+ bombs in the filthiest heart of any lineup in the game. Corey Dickerson is definitely worth the $21 investment because he could easily replace CarGo as the next great fantasy OF for the Rockies. Kole Calhoun at $12 and Starlin Castro at $11 are solid bargains. Veteran stabilizers, Melky and Rios, only cost $7 combined. I think Yelich is a better real life player than fantasy, but he could still score 100 runs and steal 20 bases. The only thing I do not get is spending $8 apiece on McCann and Russell Martin. That was a waste of money.

Pitching 10: There are not much on this staff, but it has some quality. Lester, Carrasco, and Iwakuma will do the trick as a trio, but I am certainly not in love with this staff. I thought Carrasco would go for $15+. I believe Matt Shoemaker is for real and will maintain a sub 3.30 ERA this year. Brandon McCarthy is an excellent TD poster and clearly understands how to pitch, but he is just so injury prone and lacks the K ability and apparently luck to be a strong fantasy option. Andrew Miller’s stock is on the rise with the surprising struggles of Dellin Betances. Melancon is a popular pick to be a top five closer.

Best picks: Josh Donaldson $31, Corey Dickerson $21, Starlin Castro $11, Melky Cabrera $3

Worst picks: Russell Martin + Brian McCann $16, Danny Santana $4

Outlook 6: The pitching is just too shallow to afford any injuries. I also think there is a surplus of very similar fantasy profiles in Christian Yelich, Kole Calhoun, Melky Cabrera, and Alex Rios. Mookie Betts could even fit that mold of high runs and average with respectable pop. I do not think this team has enough raw power, but there is enough quality to contend.

Florida Tigah

Hitting 7: First off, I am shocked that the usually conservative Florida Tigah dropped mad money to grab Mike Trout. While expensive, he will cover a lot of holes for the offense as the best player in the game. Even before his insane barrage of bombs, Adrian Gonzalez was a great value at only $21. I feel like he is a $25 player. I personally would not have shelled out $29 for Hanley, but there is a huge drop after the top three SS eligible players. Grabbing Lucroy for $5 less than Mesoraco and $2 less than Gattis is nice. There is still a $35 level player in Evan Longoria because he is only 29 even though he has been around forever. Spending $20 on the long time franchise cornerstone is investment that will almost surely pay off. I may be underestimating Josh Harrison because the Pirates really like him and he could go 15-20.

Pitching 7: The pitching is very middle of the pack, and it is tough to differentiate from a few staffs on here. David Price was a very fair price at $24. Wacha could be a #2 starter for any fantasy team, but I do not trust his shoulder one bit. After that, the pickings get a little slimmer with one of my former fantasy favorites, Mat Latos, getting mutilated against a dreadful Atlanta offense. Andrew Cashner has great stuff, but he gets hurt too much and does not K enough batters. I like the Fiers pick for upside and Phil Hughes is still underrated. Hughes will obviously not fully repeat his control from last year that was historically good, but he still has impressive command. I just look at this staff and see a lot of risks. The closing situation is going to look better once Uehara and McGee get healthy.

Best picks: Adrian Gonzalez $21, Evan Longoria $20, Charlie Blackmon $6

Worst picks: Hanley Ramirez $29, Aaron Sanchez $1 (I think he will have a negative fantasy impact)

Overall 5: I always end up liking the teams that Florida Tigah puts together, but I almost never love them. I usually want a little more star power on his past team, but Trout and Price may have done the trick this year. I question the pitching depth, but I love most of the proven bats.
