nolan ryan thinks QS are for pussies

quote:

“I’ll tell you, if I gave up three runs in six innings I was hacked off,” snorted the 62-year-old Hall of Fame pitcher and Texas Rangers club president last night. “What’s the quality in that? You deserved to lose. I wasn’t very happy and I can tell you the manager and the general manager weren’t very happy either.”

Nolan must have been a very unhappy dude.

How so? 3ER or less & 6IP, think its a pretty accurate assessment of a pitchers performance.

Maybe, but it doesn't account for defense... balls that should be recorded as outs that end up as hits due to poor fielding etc.

I just don't understand why some dude 25 years ago said "hey this is a quality start" and everyone thought it was a brilliant idea.

How often does this really happen tho? Pop-ups that nobody touches and "can't assume" double plays. not very often IMO. Not to mentions runs that score bc of a pitchers error are still unearned (that always bugged me)

using your logic ERA is no good either

somewhat agree here, 6/3 is pretty arbitrary, but it's better than Wins as a way to determine a pitchers performance, which is all we should worry about from a fantasy perspective.

But I agree, as a baseball stat it's complete horseshite

It's not.

I'm not talking about crazy plays like that.

I'm talking like you have two Shortstops:

Ozzie Smith and Hanley Ramirez. There will be tons of balls Ozzie gets to that Hanley doesn't. Those turn into outs.

So let's say there's two outs, a guy on third and a guy hits a grounder between short and 3B. It gets by Hanley, a run scores. Ozzie gets it and throws the guy out at 1st, no run scores.

Happens all the time.

But then you get into all type of sabremetrics stuff
