True that Hog man! We need a huge nose tackle to make this work and another big on the other side of Jordan. I predict we will be filling this from a trade or 1'st and 3'rd picks in draft.

The 3-4 we're running is one gap (I think; I forget the difference between one gap and two gap) and ask the down linemen to penatrate and be disruptive, not simply hold their blocks to let the linebackers roam free. If it was the latter, we'd need a big fat guy in the middle.
You're right. The Ryan brothers are one gap guys. The difference is defensive lineman responsibility. In one gap, the d-linemen (DE,NT,DE) are each responsible for "one-gap". This limited responsibility allows them to fire off and disrupt their gap. Two-gap defensive linemen are anchors, with their job being to hold their ground and read/react to the offensive linemen. The different responsibilities lend themselves to different players.
That is just my understanding, I could be wrong.

Sounds good to me, but I'm just learning about the 3-4 myself.

Another point Payton himself made is that there's more 3-4 talent coming from the college ranks than 4-3 talent, so the switch in part was about recognizing that reality.

Because SP is tired of not being able to find a decent 43 coordinator
It's also easier to find 3-4 OLB's than it is to find really good 4-3 DE's.

Wouldn't this be an even worse fit for Bunkley than him being the "big fat guy in the middle"?

Never heard he said this, but it's a great point. It's mainly about pass rushers I think. The top pass rushing DE's in college seem to be getting smaller and more suited to play rush LB.
