Almost like an alternate history in which there were dragons, goblins, and a few monsters. I wanted it to feel grounded in our reality and play by our world's rules as much as possible. I'm not aware of any recent fantasy books that are written like this. Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds similar to Conan's Hyborean Age. Although it has magic, it is usually very subtle compared to most fantasy series.

Right but that’s too old. Gotta be more recent.

Some of Mark lawrences books are low magic but dont sound similar otherwise.

Faithful and the fallen is relatively low magic if i remember correctly

Kinga of the wyld is a rescue mission but i havent read it and i dont think it has a similar tone
