Coming into 2020 as a redshirt junior, Myles Brennan is at exactly the same point in his career Burrow was just prior to his transfer to LSU. Both redshirted one year and played sparingly the other 2 years.

Just for kicks, let’s compare Brennan’s stats to Burrow’s prior to the 2018 season.

Brennan

42/70 (60%), 600 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT

Burrow

29/39 (74%), 287 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT

Observations

- It feels like Brennan has hardly seen the field at LSU, but he still has over twice the yards Burrow had. Just shows you how little Joe actually played at Ohio State.

- Burrow’s accuracy shows up even in his limited stats.

I don't recall his 3 interceptions.

He threw one against Syracuse after LSU put him in once they had a decent lead. He threw another vs. Troy when LSU was trying to get a "spark" in that debacle. Then he threw the pick 6 this year vs. Vandy

You could argue that Brennan had more meaningful snaps than Burrow at the time Burrow transferred in. Brennan played meaningful snaps vs. Syracuse and Troy. Whereas Burrow had just played in garbage time before he showed up to LSU. That said, the coaching staff obviously felt it was necessary to go with a more (albeit slightly) unproven player in Burrow than Brennan. Clearly that was a great decision. The question for me is why? Was it simply a matter of they didn't think Brennan was physically ready to be the starter? Or, did they not think he had the talent to be the starter? Hindsight is 20/20. But at the time all arguments seemed to suggest Brennan was the better prospect. Brennan had made some plays in games where the outcome wasn't already decided, whereas Burrow hadn't. Brennan was also the higher rated prospect coming out of HS (for whatever that is worth).

I've never got the feeling that O (and maybe Ensminger too) were 100% sold on Brennan. Remember, Brennan committed under Miles/Cameron. Almost immediately upon getting the permanent job Orgeron quickly started pursuing Tua (despite Brennan already being committed). That caused Brennan to decommit until Tua quickly shut down the thought he was going anywhere but Alabama. Then, after a full spring, O brought in a completely unproven grad transfer with the guarantee he'd be the starting QB despite never haven taken even a practice snap at LSU.

Perhaps the staff now trusts an older, more physically mature Brennan. But spring practice will be interesting as I'm sure it will be somewhat difficult for O to accept a lesser performance after just witnessing the year Burrow put together.

would be interesting to see how many of those attempts for each QB were in 4th quarter and how many of those attempts were in winning vs losing games

Orgeron was on the radio the other day and discussion turned to replacing Burrow next season. His comments were something along the lines of “Now Myles will have to step up.” It didn’t sound like a ringing endorsement, but maybe I was reading into it too much.

Some of you guys can find negativity in anything. Doesn’t sound negative to me.
