So I think the common thought for an 8 team playoff is that the first round would be on campus. I have 2 questions.

1. Would this be the week after conference championships or 1 week before the semis on New Years Day?

2. Would the teams that lose in the first round get slotted into a bowl game? In the current format you still get a bowl game either way and the revenues that come with it. In theory with this new format you'd have 4 of the top 8 teams staying home during bowl season if the games are the week after conference championship games.

ETA: 3rd question, what happens with the Army Navy game? That game is pretty sacred and traditionally holds a spot as the only game on during that last week. Do they just get told tough shite, the playoff needs room?

Even with conference championships, you still get a few weeks to prepare for the first round. I honestly wouldn't mind something similar to the FCS format.

Why not a week after conference championships, that way...

The losers could be slotted into bowl games.

Army/Navy have made it pretty clear they don't give a damn about the CFP (or the CFP doesn't care about them) seeing as how they play after the final rankings are announced.

This was my thought as well. I wanted to see what others thought about this. Maybe they get the non semi final NY6 games by default?

I believe on the off chance Navy or Army are in contention for the CFP the committee has said they would delay their final picks until after that game. But again this is highly unlikely.

I've never really thought about it, but I like the idea.

If it's all the losers of the first games it obviously wouldn't be rematches and I think it'd be easy enough to avoid regular season rematches because you'd have 4 teams to juggle around with 4 other teams that would get the 8 bids to the 4 non playoff bowls.

You could also use the current NY6 bowl games as the 4 quarterfinal and 2 semifinal games and alternate which bowls get the semis. Just play the first round the weekend before Christmas, semifinal for New Years.

ETA: on campus games would be my preference but using all 6 bowls is just another idea
