(RVSM) actually exists to avoid collisions.

Ummm, no

Depends on how you look at it. It's purpose is to fit more crossing traffic into a tighter airspace. RVSM is an efficiency thing at it's core.

I don't thing he's wrong in saying it exists to avoid midair collisions in that only RVSM capable aircraft are allowed in RVSM airspace.

I know there are exceptions. I've flown above 290 in a Non-RVSM old arse C-130. All I had to do was say "negative RVSM". It was a Sunday and we were light.

No, you do not ever get within 1,000 feet of another plane.

Almost weekly, I get a “1,000” call at cruise altitude.

GPS navigation has most airplanes exactly where they are suppose to be on an airway and when crossing over the radar altimeter picks up the lower aircraft and you get the “1,000” audible call.

I'm happy with it. Keeping my app updated at purple for the next year or so though. Been flying rubber dog shite for the AF for my whole career and I like it.

Something about boxes and bitching.

I don’t really have a dog in this fight but one time on a southwest flight I was looking out the window and another southwest plane flew almost directly under us going the opposite direction. Scared the shite outta me and I was convinced someone fricked up until I got home and researched to find it was perfectly normal vertical separation. So to the person who said they’re never 1000’ apart is incorrect
