Another thing to consider was the difference LSU's D made in in the post-season run. 3 games against top five opponents, two against top 10 offenses, and not more than 400 yards given up. That should be regarded as an elite performance, especially when discussing whether to focus on a QB guru or a defensive coach.

It would seem regardless you need some extremely elite unit to be successful in the playoffs. Clemson's D was number 1 in 2018, Alabama's D in 2017 was number 1 and so on, with the only real outlier being OSU in 2014, which had both units ranked in the 20s. The other unit has to be good enough but also has to have some elite element. Our LB play was definitely elite under Aranda, which also allowed us to nurture the entire D along in 2019.
