They do make backer rod up to 1-1/2". It all depends on how much you need. When you go above the 3/4" DIY stuff at HomeDepot you start getting into bulk rolls with 500-800 foot on a roll to get the larger sizes.

Backer rod comes in 1 1/2" and greater - @ 6' lengths.
