hunt small family property (300 acres) and I’m the only one hunting it.I’ve killed about 50 bucks over the years and only 1 was 31/2 years, rest have been 2 1/2 and a few 1 1/2 years old.
I hunt a similar size property and it took us a while to get to shooting consistent 3.5+ bucks. Couple of questions/observations based on your post.
1) how are you aging the bucks? We kill small antlered deer that are old. Maybe you are killing older bucks than you think?
2) 50 bucks by yourself seems like a lot. How many do you average a year?
3) It is hard to gauge movement on a property with only 1 person hunting. Are you hunting food plots and the high line only? We typically kill our bucks where we can only see 30-50 yards in thicker areas.
4) We had too many does and aggressively took 10-15 does over a decade off 300ish acres. It wasn’t until the population was lower that we started seeing more mature bucks. We also religiously passed on everything and there was 3-4 years where we didn’t kill a buck.
5) do you know when the rut is at your place? We consistently kill our bucks within a 2 week period leading up to the first chasing. We shoot more bucks cruising before chasing starts. Took us a while to figure out the exact timing since Louisiana ruts are so variable.
