How can it be "overtly racist" if the people accused are unconscious of any racist intent? It could be offensive, perhaps, but not "overtly racist."

It's not racist. It's annoying but the people are doing it out of good feelings and love for the team and the Braves identity. The nickname has been intended as an inspiration to a team. Something to look up to.
