I mean, its loaded with blanks or real ammo. That's it.
So, they hand you a gun, you just quickly look and see if its a Blank.
Or Live
I don't understand in the least why some folks think it's controversial.

It’s not terribly controversial. I just don’t know that it’s particularly effective. I’ll say they have the opportunity if they decide to and varying degrees of participation happen. If putting point blank period duty of care and accountability on an individual the armorer is the spot, not the actor as long as actors are following their own protocols.
I’ll counter: Do you believe putting that protocol into place would have prevented her death?
If true that they had multiple issues on set and the solution was to get rid of all the concerned parties, I don’t believe it changes this outcome or saves a single life over the last half century (I don’t know deep Hollywood gun history well enough to comment longer timeline). This group potentially flaunted the protocols and removed people that were upset by that instead of recognizing and adhering to the previously set and incredibly successful programs.
Another on the record question for you: if you were tasked with changing one protocol to save this life, would you focus on adding an extra step in the inspection of the gun with existing teams, or would you push for better whistleblowing procedure for productions to ferret out the teams ignoring the existing procedures?
