If something like this goes on for years and you never had any idea of suspicion, you’re likely either an absentee parent for one reason or another or not a good parent and weren’t for a long time.
Most of the stories of events like this be it gymnastics, Boy Scouts, priests, etc are because a parent wasn’t around and wasn’t there for the kid and just kept letting their kid hang around adults without supervision and without question.

That’s a key point. Most abusers don’t target children with good parents and home lives. They target children that have nobody to go to and are more vulnerable.
