They really should have just focused on china. Had they left the US alone and conquered more of China and mainland Asia, and Germany either made a peace or conquerered Britain, the Axis could have presented Russia with a pincer attack that had their full focus. (Or you know, just not attacked Russia in the winter without adequate supplies)

There are many interesting "what ifs" about World War II, but after their defeat by the Soviets at Battles of Khalkhin Gol in 1939, the Japanese wanted no part of a war with the USSR.

Much like Germany, they needed oil. China didn't have any in appreciable quantities. The Dutch East Indies did, and Japan couldn't get to it without disposing of the US and British navies. Which they did, temporarily.
