I do the cold water thing most often as well, but that's because I'm doing last minute thawing in those situations.
If I plan ahead, it is almost always the fridge. I just leave it on the counter next to the fridge for about an hour before it goes in if it's only the night before I need it, because it's very common for things to still be frozen solid if I don't.
