Sports owners use their leverage with fans and local governments to parasitically extract city and state resources and carve out subsidies and free rent to an ungodly level that no self respecting market capitalist would accept for any other business arrangement if they didn’t have deep emotional ties to the product like sports creates.
It’s Lemon socialism at its most distilled. The public bears the brunt of the expenses while the private ownership takes all of the profits for itself. If Louisiana or any state attempts to alter the parasitic relationship, the team will threaten to relocate and rile up the tribalistic knuckledraggers like those coming to Gayles defense reflexively in here
Gayle pays no sales taxes, pays no rent for the overwhelmingly publicly financed and maintained Superdome, those stadium debts are paid through tax payers. She gets all money from the naming rights they sell from publicly funded stadiums, she gets almost all revenue from the games hosted in the tax funded stadiums. And at any point she can just take her tax payer dollars and sell the franchise off to another state and start the relationship anew.
Nice of Gayle to donate some pocket change back from the 100’s of millions of dollars Louisianians have helped put in her and her husbands pocket, but excuse me if I’m not reflixively simping for someone doing the bare minimum to ensure her PR image post hurricane doesn’t draw negative attention. Which is all a measly donation like this amounts to when you step back and consider what the state has given directly to her and her husband.
