The true joy of MTV (and old SportsCenter on ESPN while we're at it) was the joy of discovery. Yes, you can see any video or sports highlight you want now on YouTube, but it requires you to go and actively pursue it. You only see the things you already like.
MTV was the nation's radio station and had, after some initial stumbles, a pretty diverse playlist. You got exposed to things outside your comfort zone (same with ESPN -- you saw the highlights of EVERY game, so you got a better feel of the entire leagues).
We have more access and content than ever before. What we lack is curation. MTV wasn't perfect at it, but I give them points for trying.
