Young has a career OPS of .807 and fielding percentage of .958. Thompson is .773 and .920. Young is definitely an upgrade if it comes down to either or situation. I don't necessarily think an .807 OPS is what we're looking for though-- probably .900+-- so we're looking for more consistent improvement for sure.
Pineda has a career OPS of .908 and fielding percentage of .961 just to illustrate that his track record is on another level. Young is in a similar boat to Thompson.

If he doesn’t win a starting spot, he’s a significant upgrade over our outgoing reserve infielders, and as a switch hitter can hold his own as a pinch hitter, and/or defensive replacement. We really didn’t have an option like that last year. If he plays his way into the lineup, great.
